If You Walk Together, You Will Go Further

If you walk together, you will go further

Some verses by Antonio Machado remind us that life can be taken as a path of its own that must be traveled and that it has obstacles that cannot be avoided. What you can do is decide how to overcome obstacles and how to focus the path towards your goals and, in this sense, it is good to know that you are accompanied.

The famous cook said in this interview that one of his life lessons had been to realize that being alone is being dead. He probably did it by understanding that the road is full of lions with many faces and different shapes, where you may be able to beat some faster if you do it alone, but you will never be able to defeat them all if you do not do it accompanied.

If you are alone, you are dead

Being alone is not the same as feeling lonely, nor is it the same as wanting to be alone. That is, the loneliness desired is always good at certain times and even necessary. Feeling alone is being surrounded by people and only finding emptiness. Being alone is wanting to cross a river and not being able to because you have no one to help you throw down a log to act as a bridge.

Nobody is going to make the journey easy for you and it will be very complicated if you intend to do it alone: if you want to cross you may succeed, but  surrounding yourself with the right people who voluntarily lend you a hand will get you to double the strength and ingenuity that you are capable of. in front of an obstacle.

I suppose that is why the Maasai shared the lesson with Chicote: not because loneliness was bad, but because traveling accompanied is sometimes essential. To give an example a practical case, let’s imagine that you want to set up a business: it is unlikely that you have enough tools to build it by yourself, so it will be much easier if a team, with different capacities, helps you and you can share your happiness of success with it.

Getting to the end is not the important thing, but doing it together

When you have managed to pull the log and reach the other shore, you will understand the value of being accompanied and the virtue of knowing when it is better to be alone. Then, you will also know that it is nice to be lucky enough to have someone there, next to you, who will not let you fall or drown, who will keep you on your feet and allow you to rest at least for a few moments.

Many times we tell ourselves that it is  better alone than in bad company and we forget that the choice of who accompanies us resides in us : there is time and situations for both, for the desired solitude and to share the illusions with those who truly surround us. .

In this sense, you may be interested to know that Albert Einstein once commented that he felt alone: he had managed to achieve his goals and became the best known scientist of the 20th century, but emotionally loneliness invaded him. This also shows that, sometimes, cultivating affective relationships is a necessary ingredient to feel complete.

The push has more effect if someone gives it to you

When a baby begins to take his first steps, parents are aware that he has to do it himself, although it is always wise to lend him a hand and make him feel accompanied. The same thing happens when we become adults: you are self-sufficient to walk with a healthy self-esteem, but it never hurts that someone is willing to push you  forward if necessary.

The presence of some people in your life can sometimes be the impetus you need to go beyond where you once thought your limits were. These people can make you believe what you deserve, that you fight for your dreams and your illusions and that you do not stop in the face of doubts and fears.

Taking the journey together is undoubtedly being lucky to have found special people, who care about you and whose challenges are shared with you. If they are really worth it, in addition, they will follow you to the end and will not stop trying to get you to achieve what you have proposed.
